The theme of the symposium refers to the two main approaches in biology, the naturalistic and the physicalistic approach. While the naturalistic approach had a high status during the time of Linnaeus, the physicalistic approach has dominated the biology of the 20th century and beyond. The question we want to explore at this meeting is whether we are now approaching - in the wake of the biodiversity crisis and the genomics explosion - a renaissance of the Linnaean naturalistic approach of biology, but now merged with the physicalistic approach. We also want to explore how these approaches interact within modern biology, including neuroscience, systems biology and ecology.
