Linnaeus presented his revolutionary sexual system of plants for the first time in 1735. His contemporaries were shocked by the frank parallels Linnaeus made to human sexuality, nevertheless his practical system was soon to spread around the world.
Using words and images, the book takes the reader on a journey throughout Linnaeus´
sexual system, its organization and history. The beautiful, unique photographs of Helene Schmitz present the original 24 classes of the system, while Nils Uddenberg´s text lets us follow the life of Linnaeus from his youth in Stenbrohult in theprovinceofSmåland ,Swedenuntil he became a celebrated, world-famous professor in Uppsala. Pia Östensson, a biologist at the SwedishMuseum of Natural History, provided botanical expertise and wrote the captions for the illustrations.
Helene Schmitz´s previous book, blow up, was nominated for the Swedish literature award, Augustpriset, in 2003. The same year Professor Nils Uddenberg won Augustpriset for his book, Idéer om livet, in the category Best Swedish Non-Fiction Book.
