What is happening with
Linnaeus’ correspondence?

A considerable proportion of the original manuscripts in the large collections in Sweden and overseas are now available as digital facsimiles on the project website linnaeus.c18.net. They include all the letters in the collections belonging to the Linnean Society of London. They are first and foremost all letters to Linnaeus from others, among them a large number of prominent overseas natural scientists. There are also a number of letters written by Linnaeus himself.

Most of the letters from Linnaeus belong to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. They too are available on the project website, and include the most extended series of preserved letters from Linnaeus to one person, namely Abraham Bäck (1713-1796), Linnaeus’ closest friend. There is also a long series of letters to the secretary of the Academy of Sciences.

The website also contains a large number of digital facsimiles from the collection of the National Archives in Stockholm and from Uppsala University Library. We are successively complementing the images of the letters with summaries in English.
